Showing up in AI answers: what AEO means for your business

The way people find local businesses is shifting. Instead of scrolling through a page of search results, more customers are just asking an AI assistant a direct question: who's a good plumber near me, or which company should I call for a leaking water heater in my town. The assistant gives them an answer, often just one or a few names. If your business is one of those names, you win. If it's not, you never even got a chance.

This is sometimes called answer engine optimization, or AEO. It's the newer cousin of the older idea of optimizing for search rankings. The difference is the goal. Search optimization tries to get you onto a list of blue links the customer scrolls through. AEO tries to make you the answer the AI actually says out loud when someone asks. Being one option among ten is very different from being the recommendation.

The encouraging part is that a lot of what helps you rank in traditional search also helps you show up in AI answers, because the assistants draw on the same underlying information. A complete, accurate business profile, consistent details across the web, clear descriptions of exactly what you do and where, and strong reviews all make it more likely the AI understands you well enough to recommend you. There's no separate secret. It's the fundamentals, done cleanly.

Specificity helps a lot here. AI assistants are trying to match a customer's exact question to the best fit, so being clear and specific about your services and your service area makes you an easier match. A business described vaguely as home services is harder to recommend than one clearly described as drain cleaning and water heater repair in a named set of towns. The clearer you are, the more questions you can be the answer to.

Reviews and reputation matter even more in this world, because when an assistant recommends just one or two businesses, it leans on signals of trust to choose. A business with many recent, positive reviews is a safer recommendation for the AI to make, so it makes it more often. Collecting reviews steadily isn't just good for human customers anymore, it's how you earn a spot in the answers machines give.

You don't need to chase every new trend to prepare for this. Keep your information complete, accurate, and consistent, describe what you do in specific plain language, and build up genuine reviews over time. That's the foundation that makes you findable whether a customer scrolls a search page or just asks an assistant. Cadrey helps on the review side by keeping the asks going automatically, so your reputation, and your odds of being the answer, keep growing.
